John's Story

John Hind - Macmillan Jersey

‘I volunteer as an emotional support worker for Macmillan Jersey. I started volunteering when I took early retirement and wanted to take on a role that ‘meant’ something.

‘I work shifts and no two are the same. We are trained to deal with all situations and I truly believe I gain as much as I give. To have someone enter in crisis and leave feeling even a little bit better is truly satisfying. What has really surprised me is how much I enjoy volunteering. Macmillan Jersey hold many fund-raising events and I love getting involved.

‘Many people think volunteering is just about tea and sympathy, it is so much more than that. My advice to anyone thinking of volunteering is to go for it. Find an area you are passionate about and get in contact - now!’
