Nigel's Story

30/05/2019

Nigel Smith

I am the Chairperson for the Soldiers Charity and Vice Chairperson for the Royal British Legion Jersey

I decided to get involved because of a deep sense of duty and a desire to give something back to my fellow service men many of whom have given some much to others.

My volunteering activity is based around sitting on boards and organising fund raising events the most recent was a luncheon for 140 guests that raised around £90,000.00.

The biggest benefit to me from volunteering is that it gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning and get going.

So far my most memorable occasion has been laying the wreath on Remembrance day on behalf of the Fallen.

The most surprising thing I have learnt about volunteering is that it is like herding Cats that’s probably due to the fact that I’m used to giving orders and people dong exactly what they should do in a very orderly fashion!

I believe that everyone who volunteers does so for their own reasons.

If you are considering volunteering then I would suggest you find a cause you’re passionate about and set aside your ego!!
